In my third-year design class at UofT, we did this exercise where each group was randomly assigned a font to base their entire project on…
We pulled Impact. My first thought? “Of course, it had to be Impact,” which got a laugh out of the professor. But then I thought, what if this was less of a curse and more of a creative dare?
A few hours and a whole lot of head-scratching later, it was time to present. I won’t lie, it wasn’t exactly a masterpiece, so I’ll spare you the details. But what I did take away from this exercise was a couple of good laughs with classmates and a surprisingly solid lesson: sometimes life hands you an Impact and a choice. You can either dwell on it or make something out of it, ideally something fun that brings a few laughs along the way.
So who am I? I’m someone who sees the tougher challenges as the most exciting ones: the tighter the brief, the more interesting the process. For me, it’s all about finding ways to make things weirder, sharper, and more memorable.
